ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF NEBRASKA            DECEMBER 2007

HOOFBEATS           A monthly publication to encourage, promote and

Develop the owning, training, breeding and

                                                            Enjoyment of the Arabian Horse.

AHAN Members,

Just a few short weeks left until we surpass another year.  In reality, the old saying does hold true:  “Time sure does fly when your having fun”.  Time has gone by rather quickly this past year.  And we did have fun.  We still plan to have fun in 2008 and hope you all will join us.

Our Fall Membership meeting was again held on a very nice Autumn day. Many of you that had planned to attend probably changed your minds when you saw the weather would make for a very nice trail ride that day. If you were not there you did not have the chance to meet your newly elected Officers and Directors for 2008.  The following Officers will remain:  President-DeAnne Allen, Vice-President-Jim Carr, Treasurer-Julie DeBoer.  Newly elected Secretary-Pam Inman.  Stepping down from the Board is Katrina Fahlin & Cindy Burns.  Your Board of Directors are:  Julie Koch, Mike Pieters, Shellee Kotera, Linda Brown & Denise Shickell.  I would like to say Thank You to Katrina and Cindy for your years that you put onto the Board.  And I welcome our two new Board Members.

A few items that came up at the meeting were the monthly newsletter and the costs.  Printing and mailing of the newsletter costs are rising.  The newsletter needs to be self-supported and relies on advertisements to help defray some of the costs.  Without these advertisements it was suggested to combine some of the issues or make the mailings of the newsletter on a six-week schedule instead of monthly.  The newsletter, plus the AHAN website is your only source of information of what is happening in our club.  We need to keep both of these going to keep everyone informed.  Another item of discussion was to have our AHAN directory go to an every other year publication.  We will print a directory for 2008, and then not print again until 2010.  This is another cost effective idea.  In keeping you informed while you are surfing the web, please check out the AHAN website.  I would like to thank Donna Wemhoff for agreeing to master the website.  If you are all wondering what is going on when you don’t have your newsletter in hand, you can find the information on the website.  We are going to do our best to have bits and pieces of the newsletter on there as well as other items as they come up during the month.  I feel the website is a very valuable tool for our club as non-members that look through the website may very well become a new member.  That is our goal for 2008...to increase our membership.

The official High Point award winners are listed in this month’s newsletter.  The awards will be presented at the Annual High Point Banquet scheduled for January 12th in Lincoln at The Knolls Country Club.  Dinner will be at 6:00pm with awards presented after.  Ellie Rogan will again be presenting the AHAN Royalty for 2008.  Let’s all hope that the weather cooperates for us this year so everyone will be able to attend.  You will find a reservation form inside this Hoofbeats that needs to be returned to Shellee by January 5th.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.  I am looking forwards to a great 2008 and hope you all are as well.

Merry Christmas to all my AHAN friends,

DeAnne

Be sure to check out next month’s newsletter for our special “AHA Convention Coverage”.

Your delegates have returned from this year’s convention and have some special pages that will be included next month.  If you are all wondering about the 2008 U.S. Nationals facility in Tulsa, OK, Julie Koch has informed me that we will be including pictures.

Arabian Horse Association of Nebraska

Board of Directors Meeting

Minutes

July 10, 2007

Directors present: President DeAnne Allen, Vice President Jim Carr, Treasurer Julie DeBoer, Shellee Kotera, Julie Koch, Katrina Fahlin, Pamela Inman.  Directors absent: Secretary Cindy Burns, Mike Pieters.  AHAN members present: Eleanor Rogan.  Guests Present: David Inman

The meeting was called to order by President DeAnne Allen.  The minutes from the last BOD meeting were read and approved.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Treasurer Julie DeBoer.  Julie distributed highlighted handouts detailing the General Fund as well as the GPAC Show Account to date.

High Point Chair Shellee Kotera stated the latest High Point standings will be published in the next Hoofbeats newsletter.  The High Point Program has received $167 in fees from the July Blast Off High Point Show as per high point rules.

Julie Koch reported AHAN membership tallies at 107 adults, 24 youth and 2 life members.  These numbers are adequate for three AHAN convention delegates to represent our Nebraska club at the annual AHA convention to be held in Tulsa, OK, November 14-18, 2007.

Regarding the AHAN directory, Pamela Inman pointed out that many larger clubs do not publish a directory every year.  Creating a new directory only every other year would save on the ever rising publishing costs while keeping the listing relatively current.    To encourage more members to list their horses individually in the directory, Vice-President Jim Carr suggested waiving the $1.00 per horse listing fee.   Further discussion on the directory was tabled for the fall general membership meeting.

The July Blast Off High Point Show was an unqualified success.  Show Secretary DeAnne Allen had all the financial details organized on handouts for the meeting.  After paying all show expenses, including AHAN High Point fees, a profit of $1030.79 was added to AHAN coffers.  No judges’ subsidy was utilized or requested by the show management.    Of the 42 horses that were entered, 19 were not Arabians or Half Arabians.

AHAN‘s date for next year’s July Blast Off High Point Show at Christensen Field will fall on the July 4 Independence Day holiday weekend.  Consequently, a possible change of date and/or venue for the July Blast Off High Point show in 2008 was considered.    Directors will report back with alternative possibilities.

The August Double Your Fun High Point Show will be held August 11 & 12, 2007, at Christensen Field in Fremont, Ne.  Randy Johnson and Robyn Eden will judge Saturday’s double show and Diane Reese will officiate on Sunday.  JAHAN donated $100 to purchase door prizes to be given away at the exhibitor’s dinner held Saturday night.

Queen/King Committee Chair Eleanor Rogan gave her report to the BOD.  The riding part of the contest will be held immediately following the last class on Saturday at the Double Your Fun Show in Fremont.  Following the exhibitor’s dinner on Saturday night,  Bonnie Carr and Julie Koch will adjudicate the written portion of the candidates’ submittals and conduct the personal interviews.

The next AHAN Board of Director’s meeting will be September 11, 2007, 7:30 p.m. at the Keno Parlor in Ashland, Ne.

Julie Koch moved to adjourn the meeting, Julie DeBoer seconded the motion.

Board of Directors Meeting

October 2, 2007

Directors present: President DeAnne Allen, Vice President Jim Carr, Treasurer Julie DeBoer, Shellee Kotera, Julie Koch, Katrina Fahlin, Pamela Inman.  Directors absent: Secretary Cindy Burns: Mike Pieters

The meeting was called to order by President DeAnne Allen.  The minutes from the last BOD meeting were read and approved.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Treasurer Julie DeBoer.  Julie distributed handouts detailing the club’s financial status.  The General Fund has $2350.93, Great Plains Arabian Classic account has $6809.59, High Point Shows account has $3425.54, and the Restricted Fund has $3005.21.  Julie stated she reinvested $2572.51 back into a Certificate of Deposit.

High Point Chair Shellee Kotera reported on the status of the high point program and provided the current high point results, pending membership confirmation in several areas.   This season’s new Adult Walk Trot category was reworked for next year.    In addition, several venues for the High Point Banquet were discussed.

Membership Chair Julie Koch reported on our membership tallies.  At this time, there are 109 adults, 27 youth, and 2 life members.

Hoofbeats Editor DeAnne Allen reported on the status of our newsletter.  Due to the high cost of printing and mailing, some cost cutting avenues were brought to the table, including the possibility of relying on the web site, internet distribution or the combination of newsletters  during the winter months.   However, after much discussion and careful consideration, the BOD decided to make no changes at this time in the distribution of our newsletter.

Presently, there are two AHAN High Point shows scheduled at Christensen Field in Fremont, NE.  The first will be June 29, 2008, and the second will be August 9 & 10, 2008.

Pamela Inman reported on the August Double Your Fun Show, held August 11 & 12, 2007.   The exceptionally high temperatures that weekend hurt attendance.   The total profit for the August Double Your Fun Show was $283.47 after $250 was paid to the High Point Program.  No judges’ subsidy was requested or used.

The Queen/King competition was held at the August Show .  The Queen/King competition went smoothly and was well organized by Chair Ellie Rogan.   Scholarship funding for the future was discussed.

The dates for the Great Plains Arabian Classic Horse Show will be May 15th & 16th , and May 17th & 18th,

2008 .  The show will be held at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

AHA Convention delegates for 2007 are Jim Carr, Julie Koch and Pamela Inman.

The next meeting will be 12:00 p.m. at the Engine House Café, 6028 Havelock Ave., Lincoln, NE. prior to the 2:00 p.m. AHAN General Membership meeting  at the same location on November 4th, 2007.

Arabian Horse Association of Nebraska

Fall General Membership Meeting

Engine House Café, Lincoln, NE

November 4, 2007

{UNAPPROVED}

The meeting was called to order by AHAN President DeAnne Allen.  The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

The Treasurer’s report was given by AHAN Treasurer Julie DeBoer.  Julie distributed handouts to the membership detailing the financial status of the organization.  The treasurer’s report was approved by the membership. A copy of the Treasurer’s report will be published in the Hoofbeats.

The High Point Chair Shellee Kotera indicated the year end standings have been finalized following membership confirmation of all award winners.  After a discussion regarding locations and costs for the High Point Banquet, the membership voiced their preference for the Knolls in Lincoln and consequently approved holding the 2008 event at that location.

The membership gave their support for printing the AHAN directory on an every other year basis.  Consequently, there will be a new 2008 directory with the next directory to be published in 2010.  The directory will be kept current in the off years by a concentrated effort to provide an updated listing on the AHAN website.

There was discussion regarding how to increase the profitability of Hoofbeats, AHAN’s monthly newsletter.  The editor discussed the possibility of combining some of the winter issues or relying on the website.

At the present time, AHAN is not utilizing the internet to the club’s best advantage.  The membership stated their desire that the website be kept updated and better utilized in several areas including the posting of current newsletters and directory listings.  There will be every effort made to correct this lack on the AHAN website.

DeAnne Allen reported the Great Plains Classic show will be held at the Lancaster Event Center on May 15th  & 16th  and May 17th  & 18th , 2008.  Pam Inman confirmed that AHAN will have high point shows at Christensen Field in Fremont, Nebraska on June 29th , 2008 and August 9th & 10th , 2008.   All the 2007 AHAN shows were financially profitable.  Detailed reports will be republished in the Hoofbeats.

Queen/King Program Chair Ellie Rogan praised Hoofbeats Editor DeAnne Allen for her efforts to promote the 2007 contest in the newsletter.  There will be 2008 Royalty duly crowned at the annual awards banquet in January.   Ellie plans to order next year’s trophy buckles this fall to avoid a last minute rush.

New JAHAN President Sarah Lehn gave the youth club’s report.  The JAHAN has decided to have two fund raisers this year: a duck/pig toss and the annual basket auction.  In addition to President Sarah, other officers and a new JAHAN Board of Directors were elected including Vice President Sylvia Rogan,  Secretary Brooke Maiefski, Treasurer Michaela Kotera plus Nikki Novak, Janene Cannon and Annie Gowan are the BOD.

Vice President Jim Carr will meet next week with officials at the Lancaster Event Center to confirm information for our proposal to hold the 2009 Region 8 Show in Lincoln. With the expansion of the LEC, the facility in Lincoln will be more than adequate for the Regional show.  It was also indicated that there is the possibility that our club could hold a pre show; a financial advantage to AHAN.  Region 8’s contract in Denver expires after 2008.

2007 Convention Delegate Julie Koch gave an overview of pertinent resolutions that will be presented in Tulsa.  Members were encouraged to view all the convention information on the AHA website and contact their delegates with any additional questions or comments.  In addition to Julie, the other 2007 delegates are Jim Carr and Pamela Inman.  Sigourney Inman will attend as alternate.

The AHAN officers for 2008 were elected by confirmation.  They are President DeAnne Allen, Vice-President Jim Carr, Treasurer Julie DeBoer and Secretary Pamela Inman.  Six members were campaigned for Board of Directors.  Those elected included Mike Pieters, Denise Shickell, and Linda Brown.  Convention delegates for 2008 will be Jim Carr, Julie Koch and Pamela Inman.  The alternate delegate for 2008 will be Linda Brown.
